Your donation goes to support other hard-working conservationists such as...

Naziru Zakari Muhammad who is working to prevent poaching of the Abyssinian Ground Hornbilll in the Yankari Game Reserve in Nigeria.

Here’s what he has to say about his work:

“I am excited to let you know that because of this work, I have made an important discovery. Some of the Abyssinian Ground Hornbills are living outside the reserve, behind some communities adjacent to the reserve. I have visited two of the communities to inform them about the importance of protecting the birds, as they are endangered due to their low birth rate and habitat loss.

In one of the communities, a friend took me to a poacher who could pose a possible risk to the birds and other wildlife. I had a conversation with the poacher casually, and he admitted that he shot and killed one last year. I explained to him that I need their support to protect the birds, as I intend to establish a community-based conservation program to protect the birds outside the protected area. He promised to participate if I implemented such a program.

The model I want to use is the Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) approach, which is a community-based conservation approach currently practiced in East Africa. I learned about it when I studied PGDip in Wildlife Management in Tanzania some years back. We visited some areas where this model is practiced, and we saw the collaboration between park authorities and relevant communities. I don’t think this model is practiced anywhere in my country.

I would like to emphasize that the equipment grant IDEA WILD provided for this project has been part of my inspiration and has kept me moving against all odds. This is what led me to this important discovery, and now I want to use the knowledge I have on the WMA model to protect the species.”
